What is counselling/psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are both essentially the same thing. Both counsellors and psychotherapists provide a service for people who are looking for support and treatment for a wide range of mental health and emotional issues. Counselling tends to be more short term, whereas psychotherapy tends to be a more long term therapy.

How can counselling/psychotherapy help me?

Counselling offers a space to talk in confidence about whatever is bothering you. Talking about, and hence sharing, problems, difficulties and anxieties in your life can make a huge difference.

The counselling process can help you cope better with difficulties and challenges in your life, and it can help you move more towards living a happier and more fulfilled life.

How long does each counselling/psychotherapy sessions last?

Each session will usually last approximately 50 minutes

How frequent are counselling/psychotherapy sessions ?

Counselling sessions take place on a weekly basis.

How many sessions will I need ?

This depends entirely on the kind of person you are and the kind of problems you are bringing to counselling. I normally suggest that we meet for an initial six sessions, and at that point review progress made and possibility of further session.

Are counselling/psychotherapy confidential ?

Yes, counselling/psychotherapy are confidential, except for when a client is seen to be at serious risk of harm to themselves or others. Counsellors are also required to be supervised, which means that some of the content of the sessions may be discussed in confidence with a supervisor. This procedure is in accordance to the code of ethics and practise of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

What are the types of issues that people work on in counselling ?

People bring a wide variety of issues to counselling. Some of these issues include -

Anxiety, depression, low self esteem, sexual addiction, gambling addiction, abuse, bullying, grief, negative thinking patterns, personal development, stress management, panic attacks, family and relationship problems, experiences of loss and bereavement

What happens if I miss a session?

If you can give 48 hours notice of cancellation you will not be charged for the session.

If notice is less than this, you will be charged.
